Trillium Handwoven Clothing

The studio for Trillium Handwoven Clothing is high in the Appalachian Mountains, at the very western end of North Carolina, abutting the Tennessee ridge line. The business which began in 1978 with three women weavers was named trillium after the tiny spring flower with three leaves, petals and sepal.

Every piece is handwoven with the weavers winding their warps by hand, each one uniquely different from all the others. The women weave with a hand-shuttle, building the fabric a pick at a time. Trillium only uses rayon chenille that is custom dyed to their specifications, incorporating a full range palette of blended colors. The warp stripes that characterize their work blend and soften when the weft is added and the fabric finished.

The fringe in hem-stitched at either end of the scarf by hand, on loom. When the warp comes off the loom the fabric is washed and dried (this is a one time wash only). Thereafter they suggest to dry clean each caplet, scarf or shawl to give it it's characteristic flowing velvety texture.

The Gallery carries their caplets, scarves and shawls in rich velvety colors.
