Since 1980, leather artisan Gordan Galloway has been designing, creating and hand tooling leather handbags and accessories int he Arts and Crafts style. His interest in working with leather began after reading about the internationally recognized Roycroft Inn and Campus in East Aurora, New York. Gordon was particularly fascinated with the Roycroft leather workers and the labor intensive process of leather tooling.
Originally a tool and dye maker in the auto industry, Gordon's leather hobby became his full time career when his automotive job was phased out. After being nominated by his peers to begin the application process for the Roycroft Master Artisan program, Gordon's work was juried annually for five years before being confirmed as a "Roycroft Master Artisan". As such, he is the only leather artisan in America allowed to use the official Roycroft symbol of the "orb and cross". Additionally, Gordon also uses his initials "GG" back to back to designate each leather bag as an original from his studio.
Because of the time consuming nature of Gordon's artistic process, it is difficult to find a dedicated apprentice. Instead, his artistic companion is none other than his rescue collie mix, named Charlie. You can find additional information on Gordon in the book Artistic Leather Designs of the Arts and Crafts Era. The Gallery is the only gallery in the United States featuring Gordon's leather handbags and accessories.
