Black Cat Enterprises
These lovely metal boxes and sculptures are handmade in a studio in the mountains of Virgina by Dawn Mickel and John Gardini. Cut one at a time using a band saw, scroll saw and jeweler's handsaw, simple dimensions become enriched and animate with a heat coloring process developed by John. Skillfully using a torch, they are able to pull out the rich colors and tones held withing the copper, to simulate muscle tone, surface texture or color patterns, thus bringing the animal to life.
Their new layering techniques, a process whereby several layers of copper are stacked together, further enliven each creature by adding more dimension and depth. Finally hand painting the eyes and occasionally the other features, completes the engaging properties of the wall piece.
John Burtner
John Is the resident blacksmith at Jackson County Green energy park, a unique venture housed within a restored Dillsboro warehouse, where green building infrastructure reduces the facility's carbon footprint. Methane off-gassed from a landfill is harnessed to power state-of-the-art studio space for crafters like John. He is the only blacksmith int he country to employ this technology in his trade.

John has explored horticulture, woodworking and metalworking. In his studio he crafts ironwork pieces that are both beautiful and practical for the home and garden. He also crafts custom pieces incorporating iron, copper, steel and wood for indoor and outdoor use to compliment a natural lifestyle.
The Gallery carries his hand forged butter spreaders and unique bowls.

Handmade Wallets by Dana Smith
The Gallery received a new shipment of local artist Dana Smith's wonderfully handcrafted eyeglass cases (with her unique side opening)along with new zippered wallets with a leather handle.
Her two wallet designs are unique and very relevant to the area. The Zelda wallet features a profile of Zelda Fitzgerald, F. Scott's wife. Zelda visited Asheville often during her lifetime and actually passed away here. Teh other design boasts the Smoky Mountain Cherokee woman Nan'yehi (1738-1822) who fought for human rights and peace.
Dana's works are handcrafted, dyed by hand and quilted by the artist.
